Safety fear as Wem level crossing automated

One of Shropshire's busiest level crossings is on track to become automated from December – despite local concerns that it could become a 'death trap'.

Network Rail is planning to close manned signal boxes on the Shrewsbury to Crewe line, including at Wem, and replace them with level crossing barriers remotely controlled from 123 miles away in Cardiff.

A manually-controlled barrier crossing with obstacle detectors will be installed at Wem, paving the way for the existing signal box and signaller to be scrapped.

Councillors in Wem have raised fears that people's safety could be at risk because of the changes, but rail bosses insist road users won't notice any difference.

Councillors also say that due to the complex nature of the junction at Aston Street, Station Road and Soulton Road, a signalman is needed to ensure the public's safety.

Recent figures from Network Rail indicated Wem level crossing was the sixth most abused in the country.

Councillor Peggy Carson, member of Wem Town Council, said: "I think the whole town is concerned.

"It could become a bit of death trap. A lot of children use it as well as dog walkers.

"There have been a lot of near misses, some of which I have witnessed myself.

"The signal box has become a bit of a landmark.

"It is a pity, but it looks like it is going to happen."

Officials from Network Rail have assured people that it regarded safety as paramount and have tested the automated system.

John Baker, spokesman for Network Rail, said: "Discussions are still ongoing, but we hope to commission the new level crossing at Wem in December.

"It will be one of the new Manually-Controlled Barrier Crossings with Obstacles Detectors (MCB-OD).

"These detectors sweep the level crossing for obstacles at heights of three feet and then six inches. Pedestrians, motorists, cyclists and other road users won't notice any difference."
