A5 roadworks going according to plan
Major roadworks along one of Shropshire's busiest roads went according to schedule, Highways Agency bosses have said.
Work began last night on the eastbound carriageway of the A5 between Bayston Hill and Emstrey in Shrewsbury. The section of road was closed from 8pm and reopened to motorists earlier this morning.
A Highways Agency spokesman said the work went as planned and the road reopened at 6am.
"These roadworks came off as planned. They are due to go until Thursday," she said.
But there will be no let-up for drivers later this week, with work planned to take place on a different section of the A5 between Shrewsbury and Telford.
The road is scheduled to close from Thursday evening as almost a week's worth of overnight work begins.
The job had originally been due to take place from September 10, but it was postponed until this week in a move the Highways Agency said was designed to 'minimise disruption' for drivers.
The work, costing a total of £380,000, will see the eastbound carriageway closed overnight each evening between the Preston Island junction at Shrewsbury and junction seven of the M54 at Wellington for essential resurfacing.
It is scheduled to last until September 26, with the closure of the road in force between 9.30pm and 6.30am. Traffic will be directed along the old A5 – the B4380 and B5061 – through Atcham.
Jessica Kenny, project manager for the Highways Agency, said the work will lead to long-term improvements for motorists.
"It will improve driving conditions and remove the need for lengthier works in the future," she said.
"The work is being carried out when traffic flows are lowest. We do advise drivers to check conditions and leave extra time for their journeys if necessary."
