The Tanat Valley Coach company says it will have to use two buses to cope with the revised timetable.

News of the bus changes is the latest problem for the residents of Worthen who have objected to the closure of their main road.

The B4386 at Worthen is due to be closed for water mains renewal from September 27 for up to five weeks. The work is part of a £1.5 million scheme to upgrade old pipes in the area, which water bosses say is necessary to ensure a continuing supply.

But residents say the closure will shut off the village damaging trade for local businesses and making it difficult for villagers to get around the area.

They have also raised fears that ambulances will be unable to access the village in an emergency although Severn Trent has said that there will always be access for emergency vehicles.

The regular, Tanat Valley service 558 bus from Montgomery to Shrewsbury will be diverted and a temporary timetable put in place. Operations manager Nick Culliford said: "The service between Westbury and Shrewsbury will operate as normal with one bus but the service from Montgomery will operate as far as Worthen, turn and then go via Minsterley direct to the A5 Shrewsbury bypass then operate past the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital into Shrewsbury using a second bus."

More than 400 people signed a petition calling for a contra flow system to be set up rather than shutting the road altogether.

Recently about 100 residents attended a meeting in the village hall to protest about the closure.
