The Welsh Bridge in Frankwell closed overnight this weekend as National Grid carried out the work. The bridge was shut from 7.30pm on Saturday until 11am on Sunday.

It then closed again at 5pm yesterday until 6am today. A diversion route was put in place for motorists during the closure.

The resurfacing work was the final part of a mains replacement scheme.

In July, National Grid ordered the emergency closure of the Welsh Bridge to repair a leaking gas main.

During this weekend's work access into and out of Theatre Severn remained open.

A number of road schemes have been causing disruption for motorists in Shrewsbury town centre recently. A controversial pedestrian crossing on

Smithfield Road was ripped out during three nights of road works last week.

Meanwhile, work to improve Shrewsbury's 'Northern Gateway' around Chester Street is continuing, alongside a scheme to revamp the railway bridges in Castle Foregate.

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council's Cabinet member responsible for highways, said: "Throughout these improvement works access to the town centre during the main shopping and trading times will remain available and shops, car parks, buses and Park and Ride will be open and running as normal."
