Resurfacing work on a major route into Shrewsbury will not start until after the Christmas and New Year period, Highways Agency bosses announced.

A stretch of the A49 near Bayston Hill is to be closed overnight between 8pm and 7am for about four weeks to allow the essential repairs to be carried.

Work had been scheduled to start this month, raising concerns about the disruption it would cause for drivers over the festive period.

But a spokesman for the Highways Agency has confirmed the job will not begin until 'late January'.

A spokesman said: "No roadworks will be in place on the A49 in Shropshire over the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

"When work starts in January, the A49 will be closed overnight between the A49/A5 roundabout to the A49 junction, 600 metres south of Burgs Lane.

"The road will remain fully open during the day."

The road will be closed between the Dobbies Island roundabout and the Condover junction.
