A49 will close for repairs near Shrewsbury
Motorists will face overnight disruption from tonight as a major route into Shrewsbury is due to close for nearly three weeks to allow repair work.
A stretch of road on the A49 near Bayston Hill will be shut from 8pm to 7am. The closure will affect the southbound and northbound carriageways of the A49 between the Dobbies Island roundabout and the Condover junction.
The closure will be in place every night for the next three weeks. The work is due to finish on February 16.
The Highways Agency will resurface the stretch during the closure and carry out work to improve signage.
Vehicles will be prevented from using the A49 at its junction with Sharpestone Lane, Lower Pulley Lane, Cross Lane and Lyth Hill Road in Bayston Hill.
There will also be no entry to The Common, Cross Roads, Burgs Lane and Kendricks Bank.
But the Highways Agency said emergency services would be able to pass at all times and bosses also reassured residents along the route they would be able to access their properties.
The road traffic order states: "Vehicles used for police, fire brigade or ambulance purposes and vehicles used in connection with the works will be exempt from the closures and prohibitions. Access to property will be maintained at all times."
During the closure, diversion routes will be in place via the A5, A458 and B4368 for southbound traffic and the B4371, A458 and A5 for northbound traffic.
The stretch of road had been due to shut before Christmas for up to four weeks – raising concerns about disruption for drivers over the festive period.
At the time Shropshire councillor for Bayston Hill, Ted Clarke, said he was worried the closure had not been well publicised.
However, a spokesman for the Highways Agency later confirmed the job had been pushed back to January.
