Some of the busiest parts of the town will be subject to overnight and weekend closures between February 25 and March 10 to allow resurfacing work to be carried out.

The westbound section of Smithfield Road will be closed overnight from 7pm until 6am the next morning on February 25 and 26, as well as on March 4 and 5.

Cross Street will close for a full day on Sunday, March 3, with the road shut from 9am in the morning until 6am on Monday March 4.

Howard Street will also be closed on two consecutive Sundays, March 3 and March 10.

Meanwhile, Castle Gates will be shut from 8pm on Wednesday, March 6, until 6am the following morning.

Some lane closures will also take place during the day.

Councillor Simon Jones, Shropshire Council's cabinet member responsible for transport, said efforts will be made to minimise disruption.

"This second phase of the Northern Gateway work is progressing well and these closures will enable the work to be completed by the end of March, as scheduled," he said.

"This is a challenging site to work on so close to the town centre, but the council and our contractors will continue to work hard to minimise any disruption and maintain access to town for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians."

Signs will be put in place in advance of each closure and letter drops are to be carried out around the town centre in order to inform all of the residents about where and when each part of the work is taking place.

Diversion routes will be put in place while the work is carried out in the area.

The Northern Gateway work is being carried out by Fitzgerald Contractors Ltd, supervised by Shropshire Council's term consultant, Mouchel.

Meanwhile, new traffic lights installed on Chester Street outside The Gateway and Howard Street will be switched on for the first time on Wednesday evening.

Traffic flow will then be carefully monitored so that adjustments can be made if necessary.
