Shrewsbury traffic lights scheme to be debated
Councillors will rule this week on spending £150,000 on traffic lights in Shrewsbury after a petition by residents.
More than 360 people signed an online petition calling for a mini-roundabout and traffic lights at Meole Village at the junction between Upper Road and Roman Road.
A report going to Shropshire Council's performance and strategy scrutiny committee on Thursday is recommending new traffic lights are installed.
However, the committee says a mini-roundabout would not be suitable.
Council officer Richard Harman said surveys had shown that traffic lights could be put in 'without causing undue delays to traffic travelling on the B4380 Roman Road'.
Money for the traffic lights would come from the Department for Transport's Local Transport Plan.
However, the report warns: "Whilst traffic signals will improve access on to Roman Road from Upper Road, this could lead to further traffic 'rat-running' through the village from Longden Road," it said.
"Feasibility design for a traffic calming scheme is currently being drawn up for Stanley Lane in order to improve safety for schoolchildren. Therefore the calming scheme may balance out this potential issue by deterring drivers from using this route to gain access to Roman Road."
And the report warns that adding traffic signals would see the loss of some on-street car parking spaces leading up to Meole Crescent.
