Plants and shrubs will be planted on the Five Ways and Madeley Road roundabouts in the town after claims that had become overgrown and unloved.

Staff at Fields Estate Agents, based on Broadway, have agreed to sponsor the islands having previously contributed to welcome signs and blue plaques in the town. Lakeside Garden Centre in Priorslee, Telford, will provide plants.

Adam Teecey, owner of Fields Estate Agents, said he believed it was important to make sure the islands were looking their best to create a positive impression of the town.

He said: "To be honest, every time people drive into the town you see the roundabouts and they just look overgrown and nondescript.

"By sponsoring the roundabouts, we're saving the taxpayer money and it brightens up the space. We will be paying for foliage which will be changed seasonally.

"Shifnal is a popular place, things like this can raise its exposure. We're letting people know we do care – it will look beautiful and I can't wait to see it."

The first of three phases of planting has taken place and those behind the scheme have claimed the roundabouts will be transformed once the plants have fully grown.

Shifnal Town Council has also backed the project.

Councillor Kevin Turley, who represents Shifnal on the town council and Shropshire Council, said: "The change to the look of them is really striking, they already look so much better."
