An overturned car brought traffic to a standstill on the A5 at Telford and drivers faced further delays as work continued on the M54.

A grey Volkswagen left the road and landed on its side on the A5 near to junction seven Cluddley to Preston at about 11am.

Fire crews from Wellington and Telford Central found the man had got out of the car when they arrived at the scene.

They spent about 20 minutes making the vehicle safe while the road was closed for a short time towards the Preston Island.

There were delays of up to 40 minutes in this morning's rush hour when the M54 was reduced to one lane as part of roadworks to maintain bridges between junction four at the Shifnal Services and seven at Wellington.

Work on the bridges is expected to take 40 weeks, finishing in spring next year.

There were more problems when a diesel generator being used in the roadworks caught fire on the eastbound hard shoulder between junction seven at Wellington and junction six at the Wrekin Retail park at about 12.30pm.

Fire crews extinguished the blaze within 10 minutes.

Meanwhile resurfacing on another route in Telford was due to end this afternoon.

Motorists faced 40-minute delays yesterday during work on the Randlay to Stirchley southbound section of the A442 Eastern Primary.
