Hole opens up in Newport street

A hole appeared in a road in Newport today – the third collapse on a Shropshire road in a fortnight.

The hole in St Mary’s Street, Newport

A small hole about one foot wide and two foot deep appeared on the cobbled St Mary's Street, caused by a sewer that has collapsed in the wet weather.

Metal fences have been erected around the hole, but cars can still use the road.

Part of the B4373 Ironbridge Road in Jackfield collapsed on Boxing Day.

And in Shrewsbury a 10 foot section of pathway collapsed in Wyle Cop on New Year's Eve.
