Chaos on the trains as Shrewsbury to Wrexham line closed after mortar found near railway
There was chaos on the trains in Shropshire today after a training mortar was found near the line between Shrewsbury and Wrexham, and earlier signalling faults caused serious delays during rush hour.
The line was closed between Wrexham General and Shrewsbury after the discovery in a garden near the tracks in Ruabon, Wrexham, but reopened by 12.30pm.
A North Wales Police spokesman said: "We received a call a 10.46am that a mortar bomb had been found in a garden in St Michael's Close Ruabon.
"A 100m cordon has been put in place, with a number of residents being evacuated. The railway line nearby has also been closed."
Earlier this morning passengers at Gobowen Railway Station near Oswestry, faced delays from around 6.30am to 9am because of signal problems in Chester.
Phil Hughes, a spokesman for Arriva Trains Wales said: "There was quite a bit of chaos due to a signal failure yesterday at Chester, which affected the Wrexham to Shrewsbury route.
"We laid on alternative transport by a local group coach company but there were many passengers who would have been a little late for appointments or work.
"Anyone affected who was delayed for say half an hour, an hour, or more, can contact our Customer Relations Department for a claim for compensation."
Mr Hughes said the service was expected to return back to normal as the morning progressed.
The fault was fixed by 11am.
