The company behind the huge convoys carrying wind turbine parts through Shropshire and Mid Wales has defended its record in holding up traffic.

Awel Newydd Cyf, developers of Tirgwynt Wind Farm, said it works hard to ensure people are kept well informed and disruption is kept to a minimum.

It comes after Dilys Gaskill, chairman of Llanymynech and Pant Parish Council, said the convoys which are making daily runs along the A483 between Oswestry and Welshpool, has caused chaos in the region.

But now Sophy Fearnley-Whittingstall, Awel Newydd Cyf spokeswoman, said: "The convoys have a very long journey – starting from Goole in East Yorkshire – and as most people will understand traffic conditions can vary enormously from day to day and across the country, which can impact on both the timing and frequency of deliveries.

"We are doing our best to give members of the public as much accurate information as we can through the project website, which is updated as soon as we receive information on the location of the convoys, so that they can plan their journeys.

"Our letter to residents also included an invitation for people with special needs, such as regular hospital appointments, to contact us so that we could keep them informed more directly.

"People can also get regular updates through Twitter and a dedicated account is being set up by Dyfed-Powys Police." She added: "It should also be noted that our communications about the convoys have always stated they will be continuing up to six days a week.

"There are some days when deliveries will not take place for logistical reasons, and no deliveries are scheduled for the four days of the August Bank Holiday weekend."

Councillor Gaskill had said: "If we had a bypass, like they do in Nesscliffe, the convoys would be sailing down the road with no problems at all.

"The convoys are being managed effectively by the police but they are still very disruptive to our daily lives. Residents here have been given letters from the wind farm company but they don't tell us what we need to know – what are the exact times these convoys are going to the windfarms and coming back? It has already been particularly upsetting for people with daily hospital appointments to attend in the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital or Wrexham Maelor, who have ended up missing them. I know people have been trying to get the latest up-to-date information about the convoys but the system hasn't worked so far, we need to see improvements."
