The A49 was gridlocked near Shrewsbury after roadworks caused long delays for motorists.

Temporary traffic lights were in place on the A49 at Bayston Hill, near Shrewsbury, causing slow traffic and long delays for motorists throughout yesterday.

Congestion was reported both ways on Hereford Road at the Burgs Lane junction with traffic queueing back at far at the Lyth Hill junction northbound and Dobbies roundabout southbound.

The roadworks are being carried out by Highways England.

The delays peaked during last night's rush hour with motorists reporting delays of more than half an hour.

Tom Edwards, an electrician who lives in Oswestry, but works in Ludlow, said: "It was absolute chaos waiting to get around the Dobbies roundabout.

"We were waiting for more than half an hour at about 4.30pm and it seemed like it had been going on all day.

"It is just what you don't need, especially in the middle of the school holiday's when people are trying to get out and about."

It is believed the work is part of a scheme to resurface 2.4 miles of the road between Stapleton and Condover.
