Anger as drivers park on double yellow lines and pavements in Shifnal street
The paint on the double yellow lines has barely dried – and the drivers of these cars in Shifnal are happily ignoring them.
The images of the cars, including a Porsche, a BMW and an Audi, were captured by unhappy householders, who say the new parking restrictions in their street in Shifnal are making no difference.
People living on The Grove say cars park on the double yellow lines and sometimes leave their cars entirely on the pavement –forcing elderly and disabled people to walk in the road.
Ken Poole, who lives on The Grove, said the problem has been happening since long before 2011 when he moved in.
He has previously launched petitions, spoken to his MP, local councils, police and raised the issue on social media but it is still continuing.
Mr Poole said new double yellow lines were painted along The Grove more than a year ago, but the problem still persists and he has even received threats from people parking on the road.
He said: "The problem is caused by vehicles parking on double yellow lines, sometimes with two wheels or four wheels fully on the pavements causing residents, mainly the elderly and disabled, to walk in the road, sometimes nearly getting knocked down by speeding vehicles.
"I have had verbal threats made to me, both in the street and via messages on the internet, telling me 'to get a life' and the like.
"One guy even threatened to drive his tractor over our front garden a few months back after he had parked it overnight on double yellows."I know other areas are affected by bad parking, however because I live here its obviously more noticeable.
"This is a cul-de-sac with both private homes, a large building housing elderly folk and of course bungalows again with elderly and disabled folk residing in them."
Mr Poole said customers of nearby businesses often use the road as their own personal car park.
He said: "The Grove is primarily a small, narrow two-lane side road with two like humps a few yards from the junction.
"This is turned into a single lane road when vehicles park. I have even known cars to double park."
Grant Tunnadine, Shropshire Council's investigation, compliance and intervention team manager in public protection, said action would be taken against motorists when caught, although resources were limited.
He said: "Public protection service is aware of the concerns of the residents of The Grove in Shifnal and their request for increased parking enforcement in the area.
"However, whilst the service is, and will continue to visit the location as part of its routine visits to the Shifnal area, there is a need for the service to allocate its resources to all Shropshire locations based around an intelligence assessment, along with the levels of compliance being experienced during patrols.
To that end I would encourage all residents of The Grove to report any parking infringements witnessed, as this information will help to determine the level of enforcement and the timings of enforcement patrols."
