Transport minister John Hayes will meet North Shropshire MP Owen Paterson as part of his bid to see the A5 dualled north of Shrewsbury and to win the go-ahead for the Pant/Llanymynech bypass on the A483.

Earlier this year Mr Paterson brought the under secretary of state for roads, Andrew Jones, to the county to travel on the two roads himself and also to meet motorists, residents and members of the business community.

They say the dangers and hold-ups on the route are affecting their lives and the local economy. They want to see the road transformed into a dual carriageway from north of Montford Bridge to Ruabon across the North Wales border.

Today Mr Paterson said Mr Hayes had now agreed to make the trip to Shropshire in the New Year.

He said: "We talked this week about the problems and that the improvements should be forwarded for inclusion in the Road Investment Strategy that is currently being put together for 2019/2020.

"The department is looking at smaller projects as well as large ones."

Mr Paterson has been a long time campaigner for dualling the A5 - the only stretch of single carriageway road between Dover/Folkstone and Holyhead, a trans-European highway.
