Traffic delays as work starts on busy Telford roundabout
Motorists experienced rush hour delays as the first stage of visible works began on a Telford roundabout.
Surveying work has started at Ketley Brook roundabout in Telford, and yesterday workers were out around the roundabout and on surrounding roads with cones narrowing the lanes.
Motorists going through the roundabout just before 9am reported delays of up to 15 minutes, with queues backing up to Junction 6 of the M54 past the Wrekin Retail Park.
Some drivers were backed up as far as Lawley Drive trying to get towards the island.
The work is to allow new Mova signals to be installed. The lights are adaptive and respond automatically to changes in traffic flow through the use of detectors embedded in the road.
They monitor the volume of traffic passing through the junction from all directions and automatically adjust the timing of the lights to minimise delays.
They are also to be installed at Randlay interchange, where initial work has also now begun.
Both sets of roadworks will run until March.
The plans are all part of Telford Growth Point Package which has already seen work take place at the Shawbirch roundabout, Limekiln roundabout in Priorslee, Clocktower roundabout in Donnington, Trench Lock roundabout, M54 Junction 4, Rampart Way and the extension of Hortonwood Business Park.
The total package of works across the borough is costing £17.4 million.
About £13.9 million of this funding has been provided through the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership Local Growth Fund Deal.
The remaining funding will be provided through Section 106 contributions secured from new housing and employment developments.
It is hoped the package will help help create about 5,400 jobs and 2,800 houses in Telford.
