Station Road will be shut for two-and-a-half months while Shropshire Homes builds new sewers in the area. The work is tied to the building of 50 new houses on the road.
Councillor Eric Carter, who represents Newport on Telford & Wrekin Council, said the work was unavoidable.
After Councillor Carter met officers, the work was reduced from 12 weeks to 10 weeks, with construction going on seven days a week.
"It's going to be extremely difficult," he said.
"Traffic is going to be going down back roads and rat runs – it's not going to be easy.
"It's not an ideal situation but hopefully it all goes according to plan and we get the thing over as soon as possible."
