More disruption on way for Shrewsbury drivers
Drivers in Shrewsbury are being warned to brace themselves for more disruption due to resurfacing work.
Shrewsbury is currently the focus of a number of different roadworks, along with ongoing changes to Meole Brace Roundabout as part of the Shrewsbury Integrated Transport Package (SITP).
The latest work, which is also part of Shropshire Council's £12 million SITP, will see potential disruption at Sutton Park Roundabout between April 10 and May 5.
The work will start on April 10 under lane closures, and then from April 18 to May 5, resurfacing work will be carried out overnight, between 8pm and 6am.
During those times the roundabout and Pritchard Way/Hazledine Way on the A5112 will be closed and a diversion route will be in place, taking drivers along Wenlock Road and Oteley Road.
Access to Whitecroft Road from the roundabout will be maintained under two-way traffic lights while access to Sutton Lane and adjoining roads will be provided via Reabrook Avenue and Adams Ridge.
A series of roadworks are planned as part of the SITP throughout 2017. As well as Meole Brace and Sutton Park roundabouts, work will also take place at Reabrook Roundabout, the English Bridge Gyratory, and Longden Coleham.
Improved crossings will be put in at most of the junctions.
Work at Meole Brace roundabout, which sparked opposition and a petition, has taken place in two stages and started again in February. It is due to be completed in spring.
Steve Brown, highways, transport and environmental maintenance manager with Shropshire Council, asked people to be understanding and said the work would lead to long-term benefits.
He said: "We appreciate that this work will cause some disruption and inconvenience to road users but we’re aiming to minimise this by carrying out the resurfacing work overnight and ensuring that access to Whitecroft Road is maintained. We ask people to bear with us while this important work is carried out as it will lead to significant improvements at the roundabout, and is an important part of the SITP work.”
The idea behind the SITP is to encourage drivers to use the ‘inner bypass’ for trips across the town, rather than using routes through the town centre.
A number of other roadworks have been taking place in the town including gas works on Copthorne Road which have seen drivers asked to take diversion routes.
