Overnight closure for Shrewsbury's A5 Emstrey roundabout
One of Shrewsbury's busiest roundabouts and approaching roads closes overnight for "essential" maintenance work to be carried out.
Emstrey roundabout and the roads approaching it in Shrewsbury will be temporarily closed between 12am and 7am on April 23 when Western Power Distribution (WPD) replaces 33,000 volt overhead lines which cross the island, and place some lines underground.
About 5km of power lines will be replaced, part of which will involve drilling underneath the roundabout.
Overhead pylons and lines will be removed and this will require the temporary closure of all roads approaching Emstrey roundabout. They include the A5 between Preston roundabout and the A458 (Weeping Cross roundabout), the B4380 Thieves Lane, London Road at Emstrey, and the B4380 Emstrey Bank.
To notify and remind drivers, advance information signs will be placed at various locations two weeks before the work begins, and during the closures diversion route signs will be in place.
To minimise disruption and inconvenience – and to ensure they don't coincide with any major events and other ongoing works in the Shrewsbury area – the works have been co-ordinated between Shropshire Council, WPD and Highways England as part of the overall Shrewsbury Highways Improvement Programme.
The closures are essential for the safety of the public and workforce, Shropshire Council said.
The WPD work around Emstrey Island is expected to be completed by the end of April, and the rest of the project work by spring 2018.
