Roadworks in Ironbridge get underway
Work will begin this week to improve roads in the Ironbridge Gorge.
Telford & Wrekin Council will be carrying out a carriageway maintenance scheme in Ironbridge to improve the condition of the existing carriageway surface on The Wharfage, Tontine Hill and High Street.
Carriageway patching will begin today and will run through to Friday between The Waterloo Street roundabout.
The Museum of the Gorge will see the removal of existing speed humps. A variety of traffic management will be used including stop and go, traffic lights and give and take between 9.30am and 3.30pm each day.
Each section of work will be completed within these hours, on Monday to Friday, to ensure no work takes place in the evenings and weekends.
Carriageway Surface Treatment will start on May 8 and see the carriageway surface between the Madeley Hill roundabout and the Museum of the Gorge upgraded.
This process will be completed over a number of days.
Loose stone will be present on site for several days to allow chippings to be embedded before sweeping and a final application of bitumen and specialist conservation road markings. These works will be completed under stop and go traffic management.
The speed bumps between the Madeley Hill roundabout and the Museum of the Gorge will be removed and the centre lines will deliberately not be reinstated as part of a trial. It is hoped that the presence of on-street parking, existing footway build outs and a lack of centre lines should naturally keep traffic speeds below 20mph without the need for further traffic calming features.
Councillor Nicola Lowery said: "I am delighted to see this project begin in the Ironbridge Gorge, as it will ensure a much needed improvement to one of the main roads through the Gorge.
"This stretch of highway runs alongside one of our most important historical assets and it is vital we continue to invest in our World Heritage Site."
