More delays begin at Shrewsbury's Meole Brace roundabout
Drivers are set for more delays at one of Shrewsbury's busiest roundabouts as the next stage of the junction's transformation begins.
The Hazeldine Way exit of Meole Brace roundabout will be closed one way from today as contractors continue work as part of the £12 million Shrewsbury Integrated Transport Package (SITP).
It is the latest phase of the redevelopment of the roundabout. Hazeldine Way will be affected until Friday while other lane closures at the island will remain in place until work is completed.
Next week will see more road closures and diversions in place as work begins on another roundabout in the town, while Meole Brace roundabout also closes overnight.
On May 8, work to improve and resurface Reabrook roundabout will start, including carriageway widening to improve traffic flows, cycleway and footway crossing improvements, improved street lighting and drainage.
At the same time, a full night time closure of Meole Brace roundabout will be in place for two weeks between 8pm and 6am.
As work starts at Reabrook, four-way temporary traffic lights will be in operation on the roundabout for two weeks.
From May 22, Haycock Way will be closed entirely and Old Potts Way will be closed from Scott Street to the roundabout, with signed diversions in place, and two-way traffic lights on Pritchard Way and Bage Way for the duration of the works.
Work is due to be completed by early summer.
Matt Johnson, strategic transport and contracts manager, said: "The SITP will make it easier to travel in and around Shrewsbury as a motorist, cyclist, pedestrian or public transport user, build infrastructure fit for the planned growth of the town, and deliver a real step change to the town centre, by removing unnecessary through traffic from the town, and addressing traffic flows for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.
"We thank people for their understanding and continued patience during the delivery of these important improvements to some of Shrewsbury's key junctions."
Work on the roundabouts is the 'key junctions' element of the Shrewsbury Integrated Transport Package. After Reabrook, work will be carried out at Coleham Head and the gyratory system, with the overall SITP junctions programme due to be completed by the end of this year.
