Petition calls for speed reduction on busy Telford road

More than 90 people signed a petition to reduce the speed limit of a busy Telford road, saying that they had put up with loud revving, fast speeds and dangerous driving for too long.

Great Dawley Town Council said it was working with partners to try and curb issues on Station Road, one of the main roads into Dawley High Street, after the petition was given to them earlier this week.

Petitioners would like to see the 30mph road reduced to 20mph in an effort to reduce the number of people speeding through.

Doreen Beach, 73, who lives at Morton Court Sheltered Housing, said she didn't understand why people treated such a short, busy road as a race course.

"You can't stop the volume of traffic, but it wouldn't be so bad if they didn't go so fast," she said.

"I was sitting here one evening, on the front with the patio door open and it was just so noisy.

"I wrote out all the petition and my friend printed it off for me. It was me in a strop that got it off the ground!

"It seems as if they rev up when they go through here. They've got nowhere to go except into the High Street or back up towards Heath Hill Roundabout.

"I bet it doesn't go five minutes at a time without someone whizzing past. It's just constant."

With her friends Doreen took her petition around to the nearby roads, and to people who attend the British Legion on Station Road.

They delivered the petition to Great Dawley Town Council on Monday.

Clare Turner, the council's clerk, said: "The council take this very seriously.

"We are in consultation with Telford & Wrekin's Highways to address the issues and see how we can put people's mind at rest.

"The town council has purchased speed indicator displays, and we'll be putting them in places to highlight people's speed."

SIDs work as a social pressure to drivers, flashing up the speed limit when the radar detects that someone is going too fast.

Staff at the council have now been trained to use the devices and it is expected they'll be put into action around Dawley and Malinslee in the coming months.

Great Dawley is also part of an integrated community management with Telford & Wrekin Council and the local policing team.

The council helps support the pay for a PCSO, who has been told about the petition and speeding in the area and will be keeping an eye on Station Road.
