The lorry was left badly damaged after becoming stuck by the railway bridge in Chester Street at about 5.30pm this evening.

The accident caused the road to be blocked heading into town towards the A5191, Castle Foregate and there were long tailbacks on a number of busy routes around the town centre.

Police were called to the scene to assist with the traffic.

Shrewsbury Police tweeted: "HGV stuck by the railway bridge in Chester Street. Shrewsbury officers on scene. Road is heavily congested #AlternativeRouteRecommended."
