Apology as Shifnal roadworks disruption goes on

Shropshire Council has apologised for roadworks in Shifnal that have "not progressed as well as anticipated".

Published

The apology comes after Shropshire Council confirmed that further work is needed on Coppice Green Lane, Shifnal, with daytime road closures remaining in place on weekdays until September 22.

The road closures began in July.

A statement on the council's website says: "We do apologise for the prolonged disruption. To help expedite the works and minimise the inconvenience that has been caused, our contractors anticipate working some weekends, which could entail a full closure for the day. However this is dependent on progress over the next week."

The work will widen the road to enable two large vehicles to pass one another without having to ride up on the footpath, which is used by pupils attending Idsall School and pedestrians walking from a new housing estate built further up the road.

Full-time closures will be lifted on Tuesday and replaced with a daytime closure from 9.30am to 2pm on weekdays until September 22.

The council says this will still allow school traffic, buses and residents to access premises and properties outside of the closure times.

As the full road width of Coppice Green Lane will not be available for two-way use by vehicles, traffic will be managed using temporary traffic lights.

During the peak school times, from 8.30am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 3.30pm, the traffic lights will be manually operated by contractors to ensure that waiting time for vehicles accessing and leaving the school grounds is at a minimum.

The council says traffic flows will be monitored during these times and extended if necessary. For the remainder of the time traffic will be managed by traffic signals.

A full one-day closure is expected on September 24 to complete the carriageway surfacing works, although this is dependent on progress made over the next couple of weeks.

A fortnight ago, Premier League outfit Southampton were forced to cancel a training session at a Shifnal Town Football Club because of the roadworks.
