Shifnal campaigner Peter is on his bike for '20's Plenty' speed campaign
Shifnal pensioner Peter Hassall is a man with a mission – to get motorists to slow down.
Armed with a bicycle and a jacket emblazoned with '20's plenty' across the back, the 76-year-old has been riding around Shifnal hoping drivers will see him and cut their speed.
Worried that somebody is going to be seriously injured or even killed, the Park Court man thought it was time someone made a proactive effort to hammer home the message.
"Places like Shifnal, Bridgnorth, Ludlow are all hoping to take this 20mph scheme seriously, especially around schools and shopping centres," he said.
"I decided I didn't want to leave stickers or anything like that, so I put it on the back of my coat. My wife said if you go out in that, I'll divorce you, so I went on out."
He said that so far cars have been slowing down when they spot him, but that more needs to be done.
He said: "The traffic is so fast through Shifnal. It doesn't have a bypass like Bridgnorth or Albrighton. All the traffic comes right through the middle of Shifnal, on roads built for horse and cart basically.
"The town is doubling in population and the number of HGVs coming through now is creating a really dangerous situation. My aim has been to try and remind the drivers that 20mph is sensible, especially when the kids are going to school.
"There's no enforcement of it. We don't get police in Shifnal anymore. No parking wardens or anything. We're losing out a bit where traffic and parking is concerned. Someone is going to get killed."
Shifnal's 20's Plenty campaign was launched earlier this year, calling for a reduction in speed near the town’s schools and residential areas.
But a traffic survey report released in June showed that the campaign wasn't working, with 31 per cent of the 2,561 cars monitored travelling at 31mph or more, and 11.5 per cent were travelling at more than 35mph.
