M6 cleared after morning of severe delays for drivers
Drivers faced 'severe' delays in the region this morning after a crash on the M6 involving three lorries.
Three lanes of the M6 southbound between junction 10 for the Black Country and junction nine for Wednesbury were blocked after this morning's accident, which also led to a car on top of one of the lorries - a car transporter - being ejected and landing on its roof. No one was injured according to West Midlands Ambulance Service.
Delays reached up to three hours and stretched back past junction 11 for Cannock. All lanes were reopened around 8.45am but delays remained for several hours.
The accident happened around 6.18am, with Highways England releasing a statement shortly after 8am updating drivers on the incident.
The motorway crash is also causing heavy delays for people all over the region, with reports of bumper to bumper traffic on the Black Country Route heading towards the Junction 10 roundabout and on the Cannock Road in Staffordshire. There are reports of two hour delays on the M54 eastbound between junction two for Wolverhampton and the M6.
National Express West Midlands has warned bus users that all its Walsall services will be affected with heavy delays throughout the day to the 'major problems' of the M6 crash this morning.
West Midlands Fire Service sent two crews from Walsall and one crew from Willenhall to the accident on the M6.
A spokeswoman said: "We had the call at 6.18am to the M6 southbound between junctions 10 and nine.
"The incident involved three large goods vehicles in collision and a car had been ejected from the top of a car transporter and landed on its roof. No one was trapped.
"We helped to right the car and make the area safe, with the last crew leaving at 7.22am."
There had originally been three lanes closed but around 8am Highways England was able to open up a second lane. Officials attempting to clear the road are being hampered by the steering being broken on one of the lorries, meaning it cannot be moved.
The delays come as the West Midlands and Staffordshire is shrouded in fog, with drivers warned to take extra care on the roads.
Further south on the M6, drivers are facing even more delays between junctions five and six because of a crash. Highways England is at the scene attempting to clear the accident and reopen the lanes.
There were also delays this morning on the M6 northbound between junctions eight and ten due to congestion, some of it believed to be caused by rubbernecking because of the southbound carriageway accident.
