Why Bridgnorth High Street is rich pickings for parking tickets
Bridgnorth’s High Street was today named the street where the most parking tickets are issued in Shropshire.
In the last three years, 2,037 tickets were handed out for offences on the street. That is almost 600 more than the next highest, St Mary’s Place in Shrewsbury.
Bridgnorth traders and businesses today said parking issues were in danger of putting off visitors.
Shropshire Star comment: When do parking restrictions have a negative effect?
Becky Fiddler, who owns the This, That & The Other shop, said: “We get a lot of people in moaning about being ticketed.
"I think being an old market town, similar to Shrewsbury, the layout just isn't really equipped to deal with lots of cars.
"There are a lot of loading zones in the town which are ideal for traders, but some people do take the mick so they have to be quite strict with them."
In 2014/15 10,567 parking charge notices or fixed penalty notices were issued on cars parked illegally on and off streets across the Shropshire Council area. This figure rose to 15,404 in 2016/17 – a leap of 46 per cent.
The figures are for Shropshire Council only as Telford & Wrekin Council currently does not take responsibility for parking wardens.
