Rethink announced over parts of Shropshire's new car parking policy

Shropshire Council is to rethink aspects of its proposed parking strategy following a public consultation.

Changes are set to be made to on-street and car parking charges, permits and parking restrictions.

It had been suggested that extra tariffs would be imposed on all of the car parks in Shrewsbury until 8pm.

More than 2,500 people took part in the consultation earlier this year, with many raising concerns that any changes to parking provision in the town would be detrimental for trade.

In light of the responses to the consultation, council bosses have decided to look again at the regulations suggested for Frankwell Car Park.

It had been proposed that charges would be enforced at the car park until 8pm but this is now under review.

A council spokesman said: “We’re currently reviewing the results of the Traffic Regulation Order consultation, and this includes a number of comments and objections for example proposals to extend charging hours to 8pm in Frankwell.”

On-street charges were not included in the original consultation and are now subject to a further consultation.

Members of the public are being asked to consider three options as the proposed rate of a £2.50 per hour tariff has presented machine programming issues with the proposed 30 minutes minimum vend.

The proposals are:

  • Option 1: reduce tariff to £2.40 per hour, retain 30 minutes minimum vend

  • Option 2: increase tariff to £2.60 per hour, retain 30 minutes minimum vend

  • Option 3: Retain tariff proposal at £2.50 per hour, increase minimum vend to one hour

The spokesman added: “Option 1 avoids 5p tariff increments, retains 30 minutes minimum vend; Option 2 avoids 5p tariff increments, retains 30 minutes minimum vend while option 3: (a) avoids 5p tariff increments and (b) further promotes transport hierarchy (use of off-street provision) whilst improving availability for blue badge holders.”

The car parking strategy is set to go before the council’s cabinet on July 25. If given approval the changes will be implemented in September.
