Three Shropshire Towns making switch to new parking charges
New parking charges will be introduced in three Shropshire towns from Monday.
Parking will be free in all of Shropshire Council’s Bridgnorth, Much Wenlock, and Church Stretton car parks on Sunday before the changes come into force.
Under the changes to ‘linear pricing’, people will pay a set charge for each hour they park.
In Bridgnorth’s Listley Street North and South, and Sainsbury’s, people will pay £1 per hour.
The change means it will be cheaper to park at the car parks for more than four hours, a stay which currently costs £6.
But it will be more expensive to park for one, two or three hours, which currently costs 80p, £1.20, and £2.20.
The town’s Riverside charge will become 70p per hour, while Innage Lane and Severn Street will be 30p per hour.
There are no changes to the cost of parking at the Smithfield site.
Much Wenlock’s Back Lane Car Park will no longer be short stay and parking will cost 70p per hour, with a maximum charge of £5.60 a day
Parking previously cost 50p but was only available for one hour.
St Mary’s Lane will charge 50p per hour with a maximum charge of £4, while Falcon’s Court and New Road will charge 30p per hour with a maximum charge of £2.40.
In Church Stretton’s Easthope Road site, parking will cost 50p per hour with a maximum charge of £4 a day.
It currently costs 50p for an hour, £1.10 for two hours, £2.40 for four hours and £3.60 for ten hours.
Under the new charges it will cost 30p per hour to park at Crossways, with a maximum charge of £2.40 a day.
People will also have 15 minutes pop and shop parking – including 10 minutes statutory grace period.
They will be able to pay by contactless, card and coin, or cashless parking with MiPermit, using smartphones, text messages, the website and telephone.
Clearer
There will also be free parking from 6pm to 8am.
Steve Davenport, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Our new parking strategy is designed to make parking charges clearer and simpler, and to deliver a wide range of other improvements and benefits to people using our car parks.
“The new parking charges and arrangements agreed last autumn have already been successfully introduced in Shrewsbury and Ludlow, and I’m pleased that we can now make the appropriate changes in Bridgnorth, Much Wenlock and Church Stretton.
“The new arrangements offer a wide range of benefits to users of our car parks, and a number of improvements on the current arrangements, including a variety of free and cheap parking, and parking charges that are easier to understand – together with a wider range of payment methods.”
