Potholes not that bad, says Shropshire council leader
The pothole issue across Shropshire is not as bad as other surrounding authorities are facing, according to a council leader.
Addressing Shropshire Council members on the budget for the coming year, Peter Nutting pointed out that the roads across Shropshire were better than areas in Staffordshire.
He said more money from the government was needed to address issues across the region, but others were suffering bigger problems.
He said: "We are doing better than authority's in other areas.
"I know there are concerns about potholes throughout the county and yes we did have a bad winter last year.
"But other areas are suffering more than us. In Staffordshire they have more problems on their roads, and compared to them we are doing okay.
"But there does need to be more to help this from the government."
Labour leader Alan Moseley dismissed the claims, and said millions of cuts had left the roads in dire conditions.
He added: "There is five million of cuts, five million next year and then a promise of five million in the future but that is nowhere to be seen.
"We have had issues in my area, and there has been two schemes that have not been delivered because of cuts to the scheme.
"Safety issues have increased around the county, and now there is another five million worth of cuts."
Lib Dem councillor for Chirbury and Worthen, who has had numerous issues with potholes in her area hit out at the council for not managing services, and not using contracts effectively when it comes to potholes.
She added: "There are problems all over, and the teams who come out to repair them repair one deep one and leave, and leave the rest.
"When there are accidents they come back and do another one.
"This is not using resources effectively, making effective savings and it is wasting money and resources."
