Claypit Lane at Greets Green is closed one-way for 15 weeks and a diversion has been put in place as South Staffs Water replaces ageing water mains on the road and nearby streets.

The water company is aiming to improve water quality and the reliability of supply with the work.

Bailey Street, Young Street, Turner Street, Coppice Street, New Road, Living Well Street and Change Road will be closed at their entrances to Claypit Lane.

Disrupted

While Claypit Lane will be one-way for 15 weeks, the work is expected to take 20 weeks to complete, meaning traffic will be disrupted until December 23.

Traffic will be diverted along Dudley Street, Phoenix Street, Ryders Green Road, Greets Green Road and onto Wood Lane.

Water bosses say they have planned the work to minimise disruption and there should be less inconvenience to residents and traffic due to the ‘trenchless’ techniques used to replace the majority of the water mains.

The work started yesterday.

Phil Newland, managing director at South Staffs Water, said: “The water mains in Claypit Lane are now over 65 years old and were made with cast iron which can crack and cause bursts.

Reliable

“We’re replacing them with new plastic pipes, which are flexible and will provide a reliable water supply, as well as improved water quality.

“We have planned this project to minimise disruption and over half of the new mains will be replaced using innovative trenchless techniques.

“This means there will be less digging and therefore less inconvenience to residents and traffic.”
