Do you feel as lucky as this Shropshire couple? £168 million up for grabs in record lottery jackpot

The biggest jackpot in the history of the National Lottery is up for grabs again in tonight's EuroMillions draw.

Tonight's jackpot stands at £168 million, eclipsing the £161 million won by the present record holders, Scottish couple Colin and Chris Weir, in 2011.

The money was held over from last week, when nobody took the top prize.

If the jackpot is claimed by a single winner, they will become the 671st richest person in the UK, overtaking Sir Tom Jones with a fortune of £160 million, Jamie Oliver with £150 million, Lewis Hamilton's £131 million, and multi-Grammy winner Adele's £131 million.

It would mean that the most expensive property being advertised for sale in Shropshire – the £10 million Mawley Hall estate in Cleobury Mortimer – would easily be within reach, while still having the odd £158 million left for the inevitable expenses that go with moving house.

Each week, the EuroMillions draw guarantees the creation of two new UK millionaires.

But the figure could be higher this week as the jackpot has reached its maximum, meaning that any extra funds generated will have to be shared out among the other winners.

This could mean that people with five main numbers and one lucky star could also be in line for big wins too.

If the jackpot is not won tonight, it will remain at its present level for a further three draws. Then, if nobody's numbers come up on the fifth and final draw, the prize fund will then be shared among people who have got five numbers and one lucky star.

One of the best-known EuroMillions winners from Shropshire is delivery driver James Schofield and his wife Sue, from Weston Rhyn, near Oswestry, who picked up £1 million in the 2013 New Year draw.

While modest compared to the £168 million on offer tonight, it enabled the couple to achieve their dream of buying a smallholding in Wales.

Lucky winners from Telford have included Shaun Mulligan who popped into a shop to buy a fizzy drink and a National Lottery scratchcard in 2014 and ended the day popping champagne corks after winning £300,000.

He had bought the £3 ticket at Vineyard Stores in Newport and stared at it in disbelief after scratching off the jackpot-winning combination.

It was also a dream come true for David and Marina Williams, from St Georges, who won almost £1 million on the Lotto in 2008.

The couple initially thought they had matched four numbers, but after double-checking their Lotto numbers on Teletext, realised they had got all six.

Their winning ticket was bought at Right Price Supermarket in Oakengates.

Andy Carter, the National Lottery's senior winners' adviser, advised people to buy their tickets well before the draw closed, whether buying online or in a shop.

"The extraordinary sum would be life-changing whether won by an individual or syndicate," he said.

"It would enable them to transform their life, as well as the lives of their friends and family."
