Disabled chicken gets custom-made wheelchair after weasel attack
Granite Heart was born with only one functioning leg because of a tendon disease.
A disabled chicken is learning to walk on her own for the first time after being given a custom-made wheelchair.
Granite Heart, a three-year-old bantam chicken, was born with a tendon disease which left her with only one functioning leg.
To make matters worse, she was attacked by a weasel last year and, although Granite Heart fought the attacker off, she suffered further serious injuries.
That resulted in Walkin’ Pets, who make walking devices for injured dogs and other animals, inviting the plucky bantam and her owner Sarah Wood to their headquarters in New Hampshire to help develop the company’s first ever chicken wheelchair.
Granite Heart “can stand upright for the first time in her life” with the help of the chair, the company said, and is now learning to walk.
Walkin’ Pets said: “Disabled pets are family and Walkin’ Pets will continue to work with Sarah and Granite Heart to develop the perfect wheelchair for Granite Heart and for future chickens alike.”
