Star comment: Driving safety message home
Using children to guilt-trip their parents into driving more safely is a remarkably smart idea.
Shifnal Town Council is spearheading a scheme to educate children about the importance of motorists killing their speed.
Children are being educated as part of the drive and, logically, that means kids will be telling their parents about the dangers of going too quickly.
It’s one thing for parents to ignore road safety campaigns or speed awareness courses that inform them of the dangers. Many might have good intentions but fall back into bad habits.
But it’s quite another thing for mums and dads to ignore their children, if they suggest that the car is travelling too fast.
Mayor of Shifnal, Robert Harrop, is doing a good job by bringing the ‘20’s plenty’ scheme into the mainstream and encouraging children to support it.
The statistics show that too many people continue to speed in Shropshire and Mid Wales. And the evidence also shows that collisions involving fast-moving vehicles are far more likely to lead to serious injury or death.
Some might think it cynical that children are being urged to help drum home the message. But there’s no denying how effective that might be.
