Talking Telford: Tall tales and tears of a giant

In last week’s column I promised secrets of the Wrekin, saved from a dusty box in the corner of a charity shop in Wellington.

The map's depiction of the Wrekin

They came on maps produced decades ago by the long-defunct Telford Development Corporation, to illustrate the famous old hill and its surrounding forests and villages. The maps were evidently created as part of a series of walking guides for the Telford area back when the Telford area was still being created.

The ones I now proudly own are numbered from three to six, and it seems at least seven were produced in the series. If you’ve come across any other surviving maps in the series, I would love to hear from you at rob.smith@jpress.co.uk.

But for now, it is the fact files that accompany these old maps that are of most interest - specifically the one about the Wrekin, which includes a paragraph about the Needle’s Eye.
