Star comment: Process still not fit for purpose

If the Future Fit process were a band, it might now be heading out on an anniversary tour.

For it seems to have been at the centre of controversy, inaction and political debate for some years.

Rather than providing a forum for cohesive debate and progression, it seems to have become a forum for Punch and Judy arguments.

Meanwhile, the uncertainty and instability surrounding local health services grows. Confidence ebbs away and the public is left wondering if those in charge are equipped to lead.

Future Fit has been hit by further delays as a public consultation on the future of the county’s hospitals has stalled once more. Sadly, it comes as no surprise. We are in a dysfunctional position. Future Fit has not galvanised those responsible into bringing about positive change.

We all know this much: that health services are unsustainable, that there must be a greater focus on patient needs rather than patient desires, that there must be greater co-operation between health providers and care providers and that decisions must soon be made.

For now, however, the uncertainty goes on and the future of health services in the county remains up in the air. It is far from ideal.
