Star comment: Drinking before driving senseless

Police are starting their annual drink drive crackdown as Christmas looms ever nearer.

And the message to those in Shropshire and Mid Wales who think it might be acceptable to take to the wheel after having a festive tipple is simple: don’t.

Drinking and driving costs lives. Drivers are more likely to be involved in a road traffic collision if their faculties are impaired by the demon drink.

And while once it seemed to be socially acceptable for people to have a cheeky half or two before driving home, those days have long since past.

These days, people are more aware of the dangers and quite rightly tend not to drink and drive. There are, however, still a stubborn minority who flout the law. It is up to the police, publicans and their friends to teach them the error of their ways.

The last thing any family needs as Christmas comes ever nearer is the trauma of a road traffic accident, let alone the stress and unhappiness caused by subsequent hospital visits and court cases.

People should drink responsibly at Christmas. And they should also drive with additional care on icy roads as we head deep into winter.
