Mark Andrews: Get married like Victor and Alicia . . . and make it snappy

Congratulations to Victor Hugo Sosa, mayor of the small south Mexican town of San Pedro Huamelula, on his marriage to Alicia Adriana.

The perfect bride?

During a particularly tender moment in the ceremony, Victor explained the deep bond he felt with his bride, before lovingly kissing her on the forehead.

"You can't have a marriage without love," he told the assembled guests. "I yield to marriage with the princess girl."

Alicia, who wore a colourful hand-embroidered tunic, a white headdress adorned with ribbons and sequins, and a contrasting green skirt, didn't say that much at all. She appeared to be so overcome with emotion that she couldn't find the words to express her love. Well, that and the fact that her jaw had been bound shut with about 8ft of heavy-duty cable.

I know, I know. While our schools now do tremendous work in teaching people about the diversity of cultures from all around the world, there are still a few narrow-minded stick-in-the-muds who frown upon tying your bride's mouth shut with wire. You know the type, if they had been around the Black Country in the 1830s, they would tried to stop disgruntled husbands selling their cast-off wives on Wednesbury market. But that's the trouble with some people. No respect for other cultures.
