Letter: A top-notch swimming pool would be big boost for Telford
I felt compelled to write concerning the lack of decent swimming pools in the Telford area.
With all this extra water around at the moment, thinking about even more water is probably the last thing on people's minds.
When the plans were being submitted for the new development in the Telford town centre, I thought a large swimming pool would have been among the them.
Either an Olympic-size pool with sufficient depth for diving, or maybe a large leisure pool similar to Waterworld at Stoke.
Instead we have had a second cinema built and no mention of a pool.
To be fair to Telford & Wrekin Council, I sent an email a couple of months ago and got a prompt reply, telling me when the plans were submitted back in 2007 for the new Southwater development a suggestion of a pool was made, but at the time there wasn't sufficient commercial interest.
In 2007 we still had the use of a very large pool at Madeley Court, which was very well used, since then it has been demolished.
Surely somebody, somewhere, can see the potential of a large swimming pool in the town centre area, especially now there is talk of the Quarry at Shrewsbury being closed.
Lots of people from out of the Telford area would travel in to use a decent pool as well as Telford residents. I can only see it being a bonus for the town.
Yes we have the use of the school pools around the Telford area, but they are all about 1.2 metres deep, and no jumping or diving is allowed.
Yes, the Abraham Darby pool has a moving floor, but all the times I've been there it's never been dropped to the deeper level. Quite a few times in recent weeks it's been closed for essential maintenance.
So come on Telford, give us a brilliant pool, where we can have some fun jumping in and diving, or even water slides.
