Letter: Join the campaign to save an iconic art deco landmark

I am writing this letter to request the help and support of Shropshire Star readers for the Save The Clifton project.

It is a fact that Wellington has not received any support from Telford & Wrekin Council's Community Pride scheme, despite the group having many supporters and a sound business plan. Little money has been invested in Wellington in recent years, despite many council owned buildings being recently sold.

Wellington itself has no community centre, and Telford has no designated arts centre or in fact any cultural provision anywhere in the borough.

This project would provide jobs and apprenticeships for local people, would increase the footfall in Wellington and thus impact on the local businesses and would help to regenerate the town centre of Wellington.

The project would also increase tourism, with people visiting local attractions such as The Wrekin, Attingham Park and Sunnycroft and then coming to Wellington for the Clifton Community Arts Centre. Other than the many charity shops, what else is there to come to Wellington for?

The Clifton building is the last art deco building left in Wellington and deserves a better fate than the threat of demolition. This handsome and iconic building could enhance the entrance to Wellington, instead of being the eyesore it currently presents, as a neglected and weed strewn relic.

The people of Wellington deserve the same facilities as the people of Shrewsbury, Wem and Market Drayton, who all have thriving arts venues and independent cinemas. These facilities have proved to be immensely popular.

The people of Wellington also deserve the same consideration as those in Madeley and St Georges, who have benefitted greatly from the community pride fund. Why has no money been allocated to Wellington?

Please contact your local councillors and MPs and ask them why Wellington is neglected in this manner.

We deserve better!

J Woodyet, Wellington
