Letter: Disbelief at Shrewsbury town walls traffic idea
I cannot believe that Friends of the Earth are proposing a scheme to direct traffic on to Town Walls and down Belmont.
A similar proposal around 20 years ago was considered and soundly rejected, for many obvious reasons. At the time I lived out of town but took up the cudgels as a member of the old Chamber of Commerce to help defeat the idea.
Now I live on Town Walls and it is increasingly obvious why this was rejected so long ago. The danger to 440 pupils attending the High School and also much younger children at St Winifred's in Belmont will be greatly increased. Traffic emerging from the very steep, busy exit in Crescent Lane will also find it difficult.
The cathedral will be affected, especially for weddings and funerals. Attending Claremont Bank Surgery will also become more dangerous as patients have to already walk in the roadway because of parked vehicles. Many use Town Walls to reach the very popular Quarry.
I also cannot believe that Friends of the Earth are objecting to the proposed NW Relief Road. Hundreds of houses are being built in and around Shrewsbury and almost every week the Shropshire Star reports that the A5 has been closed for hours after an accident at the recently constructed, 'improved' roundabouts.
The bypass would give the town a much-needed ring road, where traffic could divert.
