Letter: Let's have rules for the EU referendum
Like many other people, I have been following with interest the various articles in the Shropshire Star on the forthcoming referendum on EU membership.
I feel now that there should be some questions and answers on the terms of reference for the conduct and rules of the referendum.
1. Will a simple majority mean we will leave or that we have merely rejected the terms offered and there will be more talks and a further referendum.
2. Will there be a minimum percentage of 'No' votes required for the Government to consider that enough people have said 'No' to proceed with the withdrawal.
3. If there is a minimum percentage of votes required saying 'No', is this going to be worked out on the per cent of the actual votes cast, or on the number of 'eligible' to vote which could result in a different outcome.
I realise that politicians are very reluctant to comment on things that might happen, but on an issue such as this, I do feel that the public have a right to know the rules, as I talk to many people who seem to think that a simple majority for leaving is the 'end game' and that would mean 'No', but I do not believe that would be the case.
