Letter: Priorities in order

I read with consternation the intention to spend countless millions on revising roundabouts in the area. Such a move will not improve traffic flow but it will produce months of frustration and congestion.

Meanwhile, libraries and other social amenities are closed – to save money. Nowhere is this chaotic thinking more apparent than in the Newport area.

For a long time this outpost of the borough has been neglected and now the situation is to be made worse. One has only to look at the state of the roadways in the area to appreciate the complete lack of interest from the authority.

Road surfaces are rapidly becoming cart tracks, drainage (of any kind) is virtually non-existent. What drains there are, are either proud of the surface or blocked by debris. The whole picture is a disgrace, an outrage. I have written directly to the council but the reaction was one of buck-passing and indifference.

My contention to T&W Council is this: Forget the roundabouts and focus your attention of those areas which really need attention. In addition to Newport's roads, New Trench Road is constantly flooded, and the minor road (Kynnersly Drive?) is a river in wet weather and a cart track when fine.

Come on T&W get your priorities right and provide a real service to your council taxpayers.
