Letter: 'Oldies' worked to make Britain great

Having listened to all the negative comments about us oldies taking away the future from the younger generation perhaps they would like to know how the world they live in came about.

Britain was broke after the war in 1945 we had rationing until the mid-50s.

There was no instant gratification to be able buy what you liked when you liked. There were no credit cards to pay your way with, we saved up to buy things. Not everyone had a car, TV or even a telephone in the house, inside plumbing was a luxury, I cycled four miles a day as a five-year-old to get to school and back.

Thanks to us oldies who worked and toiled with blood, sweat and tears we built this great country from the ground up, in the mines, steelworks, shipyards, fishing and farming, doctors and nurses and many many other jobs until things turned around and got a lot better to give you the life you have today.

Be grateful to the oldies and instead of moaning and whining show us what you can do, will you be keeping this country going forward, and continue to enjoy the education, welfare and freedom we fought so hard to give you. Be brave it's a big world out there and it can be yours for the taking.
