Letter: Farewell to Ironbridge towers
On the front page of the Shropshire Star dated October 10, was a leading publication reporting the wonderful news that the huge cooling towers at Ironbridge Power Station that overpower and overshadow Ironbridge will soon be demolished in the summer of 2017.
When I came to Bridgnorth in 1948 I travelled from Shrewsbury on the wonderful Severn Valley Railway with its beautiful views of the river valley. The engine driver stopped the train, and got out and went across a field down to a house by the river. To our amusement he came back with some newly laid eggs. There was no hurry on a single track line. It was sheer enjoyment and wonderful scenery.
Then this beautiful railway was shut down and monstrous cooling towers were built on the line tracks. They were not for looks they were for cooling water to save money when feeding warm water into the electrics system. This unpleasant scenery will soon be moved away. The big question now is what we will do with the open position left by the demolished towers and the power station.
There is a big demand for more and nice living accommodation. We could build a nicely planned hamlet, surrounded by the natural trees of the area. There is a railway bridge that crosses the River Severn. This could be changed into a road crossing that would provide direct access to the new very wanted hamlet.
