Wem's swimming pool has reopened after two days of repairs.

The pool at the Wem Swimming and Lifestyle Centre developed problems on Monday night and has been due to be closed on Tuesday morning after problems with its water pump. But after some further problems, the pool was unable to reopen until yesterday.

Neil Parker, manager of the centre, said: "The pool water is circulated via two pumps and one pump was removed to be replaced or repaired and the pool has been running on one pump.

"The new pump arrived and was fitted on Monday. This was a big job so the other pump was turned off.

"But when we went to turn the old pump back on at 6pm on Monday, the bearing gave way. We were relying on the old pump continuing while we completed the fitting of the new one."

He added: "We were just unlucky the old pump broke down otherwise we would have continued being open."

It comes after an announcement that it is 'unlikely' Whitchurch Swimming Centre will open before September 30. It was closed for repairs to a leak earlier this month, initially just for three days, but work has been hit by delays. It will now need to be refilled, heated and water chemically treated.
