Members of the executive overseeing Shropshire's transition will tomorrow begin the process of creating the new look.

Three have been designed by students at the Thomas Adams (Wem) and Oldbury Wells (Bridgnorth) secondary schools, with the others drawn up by the county council design team.

The designs from the students aim to show the Shropshire landscape, including its rivers and hills, while those from the county council team are more traditional.

A council spokesman said: "The county council's in-house design team were working to a specific brief to use the current county shield. This was to ensure a wide selection of designs, some completely new and some building on the traditional coat of arms."

Examples of how the logos will look on council vehicles, documents, business cards and compliment slips, are being presented to the executive.

It is also being asked to agree that a new brand for Shropshire Council should be further developed in line with the chosen logo.

A report says: "The logo that is selected will be a confirmation of a new beginning and represents the moving forward of a new organisation."

The brand will provide a "fresh new identity" for the council, delivering a strong sense of place, and strengthening the public's understanding, trust and support.

"The visual expressions of the Shropshire Council brand, its livery, logos, and staff uniforms, are key to how people will view the council," says the report.

"Having a consistent visual identity helps people to understand what services are offered, and the value they get from paying their council tax.

"A strong visual identity for Shropshire Council will allow the new council to develop, maintain and heighten its profile, reputation and identity on a local, regional and national level."

The report adds: "A distinctive new brand image will ensure that staff feel part of the new culture and are well informed and engaged in achieving the council's objectives."

The executive are being recommended to agree an early "roll out" of the branding.

A new Shropshire Council website will be launched in September.

* Councillors have voted to defer a decision on the new Shropshire Council logo until their next meeting on September 10.
