A lone protester hijacked the unveiling of a £2 million revamp of a Shropshire beauty spot.

Ken Dakin, of Ellesmere, dished out leaflets claiming mismanagement of a lottery-funded project at the town's Mere.

Mr Dakin made the accusations against Shropshire Council and Ellesmere Town Council

Carrying a poster saying "what, no food?", he was attempting to highlight the plight of former Boathouse restaurant operator Charles Roberts whose business will be replaced by a new food outlet run by the council.

Mr Dakin said: "The restaurant is still not open after 18 months and Mr Roberts has been treated terribly.

"I am also here to protest about the felling of five ancient yew trees near the new play area."

Another resident, David Hay, who arrived at the official opening ceremony claimed that he was turfed out of the beauty spot's new visitor centre when he told officials that he had come to complain about the project.

Neil Willcox, head of leisure and outdoor recreation at Shropshire Council, said trees had been cut down to improve lines of sight to reduce the risk of anti-social behaviour.

"It was a private opening ceremony for those associated with the project," he added.
