Hundreds of people gathered in a Mid Wales town to enjoy the sights and sounds of the annual carnival.

Crowds of families lined the streets of Newtown and basked in glorious sunshine as the carnival procession, led by Michaela Lawson, carnival queen, travelled through the town before coming to a stop at the town hall gardens.

Town mayor Councillor Joy Jones said the event was a roaring success. She said: "I really really enjoyed it. "The town was packed out and everybody seemed to be in really good spirits.

"The procession was wonderful with many colourful and entertaining floats heading through the town led by our lovely carnival queen.

"Queens from other towns like Rhayader and Welshpool also took part in the parade before everybody gathered at the town hall gardens for an afternoon of fun."

Entertainment was provided by a variety of groups, including Newtown Silver Band, The Tividale Tigers Marching Band, Footloose dancing and the K9 Capers Dog Display team.

Councillor Jones said: "At the gardens there was a funfair, miniature railway rides, donkey rides and a dance competition.

"We had all sorts of entertainment with something for people of all ages."

She said she was particularly delighted with the weather, following a week where the town experienced floods.

"I was delighted to wake up and see that the sun was shining and by lunchtime when the parade got under way it was actually quite warm," she said.

Councillor Richard White, Powys County Council member for Newtown East, said he always made a point of attending the carnival.

"It is always well worth going to – all the families seem to come down and it is a really good day out for the children, they seem to really enjoy themselves," he said.
